When I met with a big-deal literary agent at TXST, she read my fiction and gave me a piece of career advice (slash critique) I’m only now learning how to follow:“Your writing is funny. But your query letter is just straightforward. Your cover letters and queries need to be funny, too. You’re not representing yourself well otherwise.”How do I write a FUNNY cover letter?? Isn’t that the OPPOSITE of being professional?? I whined to myself and others about this ‘bad’ advice for years (and didn’t listen). But this smart agent was absolutely right. And my imaginative cover letter recently landed me my first senior copywriting role.I just left my big senior role, for reasons, and am not planning to jump back into copywriting right away. But this week, I rewrote my own LinkedIn ‘copy,’ to take this agent’s advice, years late. My own descriptions of my work cannot be static or flat. And I believe, firmly and passionately, that it’s possible to be creative and funny and professional all at the same time. Any workplace that doesn’t value this mindset will not value my writing skillset, or me.And I’ve worked too hard to find the words to let them go to waste.#copywriting #writing #storytelling #career

Here's another commercial I wrote for The Home Loan Expert LLC., featuring my coworkers' sweet basketball skills. Yes, I *did* have to watch ESPN clips on YouTube for research. Sports!

Check out this commercial I wrote for the one and only Jonathan F. Howard! This was a fun day at the office, and I'm proud of how this turned out.

A story of a scandal 100 years in the making, of uncovering ugly truths, & correcting the historical record. My latest: "Born Wylie Eugenia Stanton, Mrs. J.A. Landry (1868–1943) was responsible for donating the land for the original Landry School, meaning she is considered to be one of the founders of what is now St. Louis Catholic High School. She was inducted into the SLCHS Hall of Fame in 2015, and she is still celebrated by the school administration—her portrait is hung prominently within the school’s halls, and the Landry Memorial Gymnasium—the school’s most famous building— bears her name."She was also a highly active member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Primary historical documents show that Mrs. J.A. Landry fundraised for the Confederate monument outside the courthouse in Lake Charles, attended parties celebrating Robert E. Lee’s memory, and took on multiple leadership roles within the organization."Not only did the SLCHS administration know about this history in 2015, but they inducted her into the Hall of Fame. The same year that marked the 100 year anniversary of the unveiling of Lake Charles' Confederate monument.Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/ebGgV27 #BLM

My former classmates and I have been working on a petition to stop racism and discrimination at St. Louis Catholic High School, and we need your help to make our demands a reality. The things we are calling for are long overdue and are only a start. So far, we've garnered more than 1,000 signatures and the faculty has yet to agree to a meeting. But it is my hope that the administration will listen—and that this petition might inspire students from other schools to call for similar changes. We are grateful for the education we received, the lessons we have learned, and the friendships we gained during our time at St. Louis. However, we also believe our alma mater can and should be better. #Please take the time to read this petition and our demands, which include curriculum changes, anti-bias training for teachers, removal of racist hairstyle rules from the student handbook, a third party review of admissions and hiring procedures, and making St. Louis Catholic High School more affordable for students from low-income backgrounds.I truly hope you will sign if you agree. And if you do agree with what we’re trying to achieve, please share this to your networks. We can’t do this on our own—we need all the help we can get.change.org/slcforchange #SLCForChange
