Little things are BIG things. Recently, I have been reminded of a few things that came into clear focus during the COVID pandemic. As everyone is likely aware, Ascension has been the unfortunate target of a recent cyber attack. Over the last few weeks, I have witnessed caregivers and care teams jump into action in ways some of them never have before. I've also witnessed the "what next?" face of disbelief that I became all too acquainted with during the COVID years. It was during those COVID years, throughout the swab site drive-throughs and the vaccine clinics, that I started to use a memorable team-renewing, smile-inducing tool: the much celebrated "Snack Cart" as it came to be called. Fast-forward to last week and a picture of our vaccine clinic hit my timeline and I was reminded of the simple joy that a Little Debbie cake or a well-timed Slim Jim can bring to an exhausted team member. It's not about the sugar high or snapping into a Slim Jim. No, it's about someone taking the time to ask them what their favorite snack is, or what Little Debbie cake they loved as a child...and then caring enough to deliver on it. I was reminded that little things are often really BIG things for those we have the privilege to lead. In situations where we cannot fix things that are broken, just showing up and saying "I see you" is often as valuable as anything we, as leaders, can do. This man is a mentor, a friend, and a trusted advocate for not only his team, but for our providers, associates, and patients. If the Lord allows me 20+ years here, I hope to have a fraction of the influence that he has. Our entire health system and the greater Pensacola area are better because of him. People in our area have no idea how many of their lives have been positively impacted because of the ideas and leadership of Justin Labrato. Ronnie and Laurie raised a good one here!

Walmart is the latest in a long line of would-be healthcare disrupters to exit the sector. I was actually hoping they would succeed, in some way. Citing the challenging reimbursem*nt environment and rising operating costs (can I get an AMEN!), which have resulted in a lack of profitability, Walmart has highlighted some of the main issues that health systems are dealing with today, more than ever. Healthcare is difficult and different. Some of the biggest and most powerful companies in America have tried and failed, all while shelling out obscene sums of money and hiring some of the best and brightest thinkers out there, both inside and outside of the industry. When I was in graduate school I had a realization then that I think still holds true today: In order to change the broken parts of our system, it must come from a top-down approach, involving regulatory, systemic, and legislative changes. The bottom-up change model does work, but on a grander scale, our sector will not see the deep and meaningful changes we need to see without the impact of some bright, courageous, and trustworthy individuals stepping into the rings of politics, policy, law, and advocacy. Let's talk about #PatientExperience. My 7 year old little boy injured his foot because he has only two speeds: 100 mph, with his hair on fire and asleep. Daddy had to take him to Urgent Care to get some X-rays and an evaluation. His foot was hurting him badly and he was afraid he might have to get some shots or something else that might hurt. The staff at the Sacred Heart Health System urgent care asked him if he liked dinosaurs and gave him a coloring set while we waited. A little while later someone asked if he could have some chips and he never says no to food. We also got some really awesome (terrible) "dad jokes" from the X-ray tech to ease my son's fear and break the anxiety he was feeling. This is just one example of why Brenda Dela Cruz's Urgent Care has the highest NPS in ALL OF Ascension. This sort of personalized care is what the experts speak of when they say "One size fits one" - Meet your patients where they are and you will not only care for them, but their daddy will shout it from the rooftops...or LinkedIn, in this case 😁

I'm very interested to see how this goes. Hopefully, for their patients and caregivers, this ends up being a beneficial arrangement. Kudos to CHS for wading into these waters; I'm sure there was (and is) a lot of pressure not to do so by their GPO and others. #healthcareinnovation
