Dancing for the Devil centers on sisters Melanie and Miranda Wilking — later, Miranda Derrick — who move to Los Angeles, California in the hopes of becoming stars. Like so many modern-day fame-seekers, the Wilking sisters turn to social media to garner a following as dancers and content creators — but Miranda's sudden involvement with 7M Films and the Shekinah Church prompted things to take a rather dark turn. When Miranda refuses to return home for a funeral, her parents take to social media too, hoping their concerns about the cryptic, seemingly related organizations that changed their daughter.

How The Shekinah Church Connects To 7M Films

In 1994, business person Robert Shinn founded the Los Angeles-based Shekinah Church — a Christian organization meant to serve the city's Korean American population. While working as the church's pastor, Shinn became the CEO of 7M Films, a talent management firm that his son, Isaiah Shinn, formed around 2022. While 7M Films has denied any connection to the Shekinah Church — other than the fact that Robert Shinn works for both organizations — Dancing for the Devil paints a much different portrait, suggesting that 7M and the church preyed upon their clients.

In addition to indicating that 7M and the Shekinah Church form some kind of symbiotic relationship, Dancing for the Devil hammers home the fact that the two organizations boast a cult's typical hallmarks. For starters, individuals interviewed in the Netflix docuseries discuss just how much money they were expected to pay 7M Film's management — money that went to the church. Moreover, clients were encouraged to distance themselves from non-members. Generally speaking, cults will isolate their victims from family and friends, all while subtly stripping away one's financial independence. In fact, Miranda's parents were hesitant about participating in the Dancing for the Devil docuseries.
