Tone mapping deals with reducing the tonal values within an image to make them suitable to be viewed on a digital screen. For example, an HDR photo that has a 100,000:1 dynamic range needs to undergo tone mapping so that the tonal values fall between 1 and 255.

Tone mapping addresses the problem of strong contrast reduction from the scene radiance to the displayable range while preserving the image details and color appearance important to appreciate the original scene content.

Tone mapping is the process of mapping the brightness and colors of the HDR content to the brightness and colors of the HDR TV, while preserving as much detail and contrast as possible.
