Bucks 107, Celtics 99 MILWAUKEE Marques Johnson scored 22 points and Ignited a fourth surge, as Milwautook a 3-0 lead playoff series. Sidney Moncrief scored 26 for the Bucks, who clinch the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal series by winning in Milwaukee tonight.

Larry Bird, who had missed Friday night's game because of a high fever, led the Celtics with 21 points. tar The score was tied three times early in the final quarter until Johnson shook free inside and converted a three-point play the Bucks the lead to stay, at 90-87 with 7:54 to play." Johnson then scored from the baseline and on a jumper to make it 94-89 with 6:46 left. The Celtics closed to within 94-93 after a jump shot by Bird and an offensive rebound basket by Nate Archibald. NBA PLAYOFFS shot clock expired on the Bucks' next possession.

Cedrick Maxwell then sank two free throws for Boston, but Junior Bridgeman scored once and Moncrief twice on the Bucks' next three possessions to make it 104-95 with 2:03 to play. Tempers flared briefly late in the third quarter as the Bucks' Bob Lanier grabbed Boston's Kevin McHale in an armlock around the throat as they battled for position in the lane. Officials quickly separated the two. Bridgeman scored nine points in the last 4:05 of the first half, as the Bucks led, 57-56, at halftime.

Trail Blazers 108, Lakers 95 PORTLAND, Ore. Portland guards Jim Paxson and Darnell Valentine scored 20 and 18 points, respectively, as Portland stayed alive in the playoffs. The Lakers lead the best-of-seven Western Conference semifinal series, 3-1, with the next game tomorrow night in Los Angeles. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar continued his dominance of the Blazers with 34 points, but he failed to get the usual offensive help from Jamaal Wilkes and Norm Nixon. Wilkes had 12 points and Nixon 10.

Portland outscored the Lakers, 17-4, during a five-minute stretch in the first quarter, turning an 11- 11 tie into a 28-15 advantage. The Blazers stretched the margin to 22 points. on three occasions in the second quarter and a 66-48 halftime lead. Los Angeles rallied behind Jabbar's play to slice the lead to nine in the third quarter and still trailed by only 10 when Kurt Rambis sank two free throws with 9:16 to play. But back-to-back baskets by reserves Audie Norris and Lafayette Lever put Portland back ahead by 14.

The Lakers never seriously threatened again. The Lakers, trying to become the first team in 14 years to repeat as NBA champions, hit 11 of 15 tree throws, while Portland made 23 of 29. Mychal Thompson had 17 points for the balanced Portland attack. Valentine added 11 assists. Anderson's goal gives Oilers 3-0 series lead CHICAGO (AP) Glenn Anderson's goal at 13:05 of the third period last night lifted the Edmonton Oilers to a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Black Hawks and into a commanding three-game lead in the Campbell Conference championship playoffs.

4. The Oilers took a 3-0 lead in the best-ofseven series and can wrap it up tomorrow night in the National Hockey League's Stanley Cup semifinals. Wayne Gretzky picked up two assists but failed to score a goal as defensem*n Charlie Huddy and Don Jackson scored second- period goals to put the Oilers ahead only to have the Hawks rally for a tie with a pair of thirdperiod goals. The Black Hawks, blown out in their first two games in Edmonton, played the disciplined game they sought for the first period and outshot the Oilers, 16-7, but had nothing to show for it as the Oilers skated off two Instant replay have umpires PITTSBURGH (AP) A group of National League umpires is again declaring war instant replay scoreboards, especially the one installed this season at Pittsburgh's Three Rivers Stadium. 1 "That board's a disgrace.

A disgrace," said umpire Bruce Froemming. Froemming was angered by three replays shown during Saturday's San Diego-Pittsburgh doubleheader that appeared to show umpires missing calls. However, none of the replays resulted in any boos or vocal protests by the over 19,000 fans in attendance. Harry Wendelstedt, who heads the fourman crew that includes Froemming, Terry Tata and Charlie Williams, spoke to Pirates' 'general manager Harding Peterson about the replays between games of the doubleheader. RACING 43 NHL PLAYOFFS penalties, including one against Gretzky.

At 4:18 of the second period, the Oilers broke the tie on a 45-foot shot from the point by Huddy, who took a pass from the side of the net from Gretzky. It was Huddy's first goal of the playoffs. Jackson made it 2-0 at 11:52 of the period on a feed from Dave Hunter, who took an across-ice pass from Ken Linseman. Goalie Tony Esposito had little chance on the shot, which came from about 10 feet. The Black Hawks finally broke through with a goal at 3:49 of the third period on a 55-footer by Steve Larmer and tied it at 7:56 of the period on Dennis Savard's eighth goal of the playoffs, and that's the way it stood until Anderson's tie-breaker.

Sc scoreboards up in arms "The next time, we're going to shut down the board," the Pittsburgh Press quoted Wendelstedt as telling Peterson. "And if they don't shut it down, we're gonna sit down until they do." Wendelstedt said Peterson assured him that no more umpires' decisions would be shown. Tata said the whole situation "stinks." "And put it in black letters. It stinks," he said. "That thing (the scoreboard) is a time bomb.

That thing is a real menace. You're talking about injuries to umpires." The umpires are concerned that if a controversial stadium replay arouses the ire of fans, an umpire could be injured by a thrown object. 1 THISTLEDOWN CHARTS Track: Copyright Daily Racing Form Inc. no -nose nk -neck h-head dh-dead heat. Youth sports and the family Fred Heinlen, a veteran of 40 years of high school coaching in Greater Cleveland, answers questions from young athletes and. their families. Send your questions to Fred. Heinlen, The Plain Dealer Sports 1801 Superior Avenue, Cleveland 44114. By Fred Heinlen Q.

This will be my third year as a coach of a youth baseball team, ages 11 and 12. Do you have any suggestions with respect to drills specifically designed to improve outfield play? Other than hitting fly balls to. these players, I just haven't found a way to" help these players play their positions. A.K. Cleveland.

A. Join the group of those of us involved in coaching baseball at the amateur level. All too often we take for granted that our outfielders will execute properly the skills of their position without specific work to develop those skills. Beyond the traditional drill of hitting to outfielders and having them throw to bases the following suggestion is offered. The drill suggested lends itself to game-like situations vs.

the artficial drill of catching and throwing without regard to runners, outs and game conditions. Allow some time each week at one of your practice sessions to this suggested drill. Put your starting team on the field. With someone pitching slow pitch, have the rest ofyour team bat. Let each ball that is hit, cepting those that have no chance of getting through the infield, go to the outfield.

Infielders will not field balls that have a chance of: getting to the outfield. Outfielders will not be making every play. Following every three outs clear the bases for a new inning. Each time there is failed execution (hit-: ting the proper cut-off man, not catching the fly ball in a position to throw with a minimum of steps, a missed ground ball, failure: of other outfielders to instruct the fielding: outfielder as to next play) do the play: over again with you, as the coach, the ball to duplicate the play until execution: is accomplished. Outfielders must be told to throw to bases: through a cut-off man and not throw just that cut-off man.

Cut-off players should catch the ball on: their glove side of their bodies. By doing so: they can avoid the time consuming full turn: before a throw can be made. Catch the ball. and be in a position to throw immediately. This can be done by catching the ball on the glove side of the body.

This drill will acquaint your players with: situations they will face in a game. Physical; errors you can't control, but mental errors will be dramatically reduced through the. drill..
