Fuel System:Replacing 1960 Lark fuel pump.
After purchasing my '60 Lark last year I am having a great time slowly returning it to 'factory stock' condition.
One thing that really bothers me is that awful looking red Edelbrock electric fuel pump bolted to the 259 V8 water pump casting.
Have no idea why the original was replaced with this thing. I have heard all the stories about vapor lock and the 'advantage?' of electric, but I've also talked to folks who have had no problems with the stock unit and a well maintained car. Clean tank, fuel filters, tuned engine, etc. I also use only non-ethanol gas.I know I'm probably 'opening a can of worms' here but, can someone give me a really good reason why I should stay with an electric pump and not go back to the original stock piece? One way or another that red piece of plastic is going!

My experience is that the reproduction fuel pumps intended for Studebakers simply do not work due to a design flaw of the rocker arm.
I installed an Edelbrock electric fuel pump on my 1963 GT Hawk being that I couldn't get the brand new mechanical pump to pump.
I located my pump alongside the frame near the fuel tank and it works great.sigpic

If you have the original V8 Carter fuel pump, I would suggest getting a kit from Then & Now Automotive and rebuilding it, and using it instead of the electric pump. Or, if you don't want to tackle the rebuild yourself, Then & Now can do that. (In fact, I have two early Nissan Patrol fuel pumps there now getting rebuilt.)

The electric fuel pump should not be bolted to the engine at all. It should be mounted at the rear, as close to the tank as is practical, and be mounted on rubber isolators, with a good ground wire provided. The entire reason for going electric is that modern gasoline, even the ethanol-free stuff, is formulated for cars with pressurized fuel systems, and boils at too low a temperature to be used in an open fuel system under pump suction. And electric fuel pumps should be powered through a relay that can sense when the engine has shut down, and turn off the pump when it does, so you don't have an electric pump feeding a potential engine fire in the event of a wreck. An oil pressure switch is the easiest way to implement that, for most of us.

Phill Harris did sell a Chrysler carter fuel pump modified to work on non Hawk Studebaker V8 engines . I has original Carter check valves will put out a little more pressure than Studebaker pump but worked great on my supercharged 57 Clipper

THIS is a Great option, no one has ever had any problems with a brand New Carter Super Pump as used on R1 and modified for R2 Avantis.
No one has had a over pressure issue that I have heard of, but if they do, it is an easy fix to install a Fuel Pressure Regulator, some include a Filter.
Both Studebaker Vendors: Phil Harris and Dave Thibeault (pronounced T-Bow) and others of the over 200 Turning Wheels listed Studebaker Parts Vendors have sold many of these.
They work great with a new Edelbrock 4 barrel and can be connected to a "Cool Fuel" Fuel Recirculating return line to the Tank as used on Avanti Powered Larks, Hawks and Avantis.

Phil's is Fairborn Studebaker, and Dave's is Studebaker Parts and Services.
