PLAYER RATINGS: Bellingham struggles but Dortmund star shines (2024)

Real Madrid lifted the Champions League trophy for the 15th time after beating Borussia Dortmund 2-0 at Wembley.

Dani Carvajal was the unlikely hero for the LaLiga giants after heading home from Toni Kroos' corner before Vinicius Junior tucked in the decisive second goal.

Dortmund had carved out a number of golden openings in a pulsating first half but both Karim Adeyemi and Niclas Fullkrug were guilty of glaring misses.

Madrid were afforded more space after the breakthrough and Vinicius capitalised on a sloppy Ian Maatsen error to finish coolly beyond Gregor Kobel.

Here, Mail Sport's CRAIG HOPE has rated the players...

REAL MADRID (4-3-1-2)

Thibaut Courtois 7

Some saves were a little unconvincing but still he kept Dortmund out when his team really needed him.

Thibaut Courtois kept Dortmund out after being given the nod by Carlo Ancelotti

Dani Carvajal 7

Matchwinner with brilliant header and that's all that matters, even if he was suspect in defence on couple of occasions.

Antonio Rudiger 6

Will be grateful he's a team-mate of Fullkrug with Germany this summer, because the Dortmund man got better of him here.

Nacho 5.5

Like Rudiger he struggled with threat of Fullkrug and was part of shaky Real showing at the back.

Madrid captain Nacho Fernandez was part of a shaky showing from the LaLiga giants

Ferland Mendy 6

Should have been booked for early trip on Sancho but settled and big tackle on Brandt at 1-0 as the German looked to break clear.

Federico Valverde 7

Great early pass to split defence and was the pick of Real midfield as they struggled for first hour. Energetic and clever on ball.

Eduardo Camavinga 6.5

Strong tackles early on but could not prevent wave of Dortmund attacks in first half. Grew with team after interval.

Toni Kroos 7.5

Signs off on glorious club career as a Champions League winner (again) and it was no surprise his expert delivery led to crucial opener.

Toni Kroos signed off on a glorious club career as a Champions League winner yet again

Jude Bellingham 5.5

Did close to nothing for 83 minutes and was his worst display of the season on the biggest stage. Then laid on the pass for Vini Jnr to settle the contest.

Jude Bellingham delivered his worst display of the season but laid on the pass to Vinicius

Rodrygo 4

Quiet all night and did not show anything close to his top level. Did well to stay on until injury-time.

Vinicius Junior 7.5

Booked for late lunge on Kobel that summed up first-half frustration. Came into it after break and it was his run that forced corner for opener before settling it with goal of his own.

Vinicius clipped a neat finish beyond Gregor Kobel to settle any lingering nerves for Real

Subs

Joselu (on for Bellingham 85)

Luka Modric (on for Kroos 85)

BORUSSIA DORTMUND (4-2-3-1)

Gregor Kobel 7

A spectator first half but needed to produce flying save from Kroos free-kick early in second and made series of key stops. Unlucky to lose.

Julian Ryerson 6.5

An audacious attempt at a Maradona turn captured confidence of the team during dominant opening. Struggled more with Vini Jnr later in game.

Mats Hummels 8

A crunching challenge on Vini Jnr that was cheered like a goal. Superb all night, nothing got past him and did not deserve to lose. MOM.

Mats Hummels was superb and did not deserve to find himself on the losing side at Wembley

Nico Schlotterbeck 7

He and Hummels looked like Nesta and Maldini at times and were let down by the finishing at other end of pitch.

Ian Maatsen 6.5

Inverted as midfielder from left back when his team attacked and was terrific going forward. Not so good in defence and at fault for at least one goal.

Marcel Sabitzer 7

Is this really the same fella who flopped at Man United? Always on the ball, picking passes in first half. Top tackle on pitch invader, too.

Emre Can 7

Strong start and was bossing it for a period before fading, like his team.

Dortmund skipper Emre Can delivered a strong showing but later faded like his team-mates

Jadon Sancho 6

Flashes of promise but was not as effective as in semi-finals and was a surprise to see him last until 87th minute.

Jadon Sancho displayed flashes of promises but it was a surprise to see him last until late on

Julian Brandt 7.5

Caused Real all sorts of problems in No 10 position. Underrated, and was game's best player in first half.

Karim Adeyemi 6

If only he could finish… poor touches cost him two glorious chances to score in first half. End product let him down.

Karim Adeyemi squandered a golden opportunity after he rounded Courtois in the first half

Niclas Fullkrug 6.5

A show of strength and skill in first hour, superbly laying on chance for Brandt and then clipping the post. Might have scored with header, though, and was beaten by Carvajal for goal.

Niclas Fullkrug fired an effort off the woodwork as Dortmund piled on the pressure early on

Subs

Marco Reus (on for Adeyemi 72) 5

Donyell Malen (on for Can 81)

Sebastian Haller (on for Brandt 81)

Jamie Bynoe-Gittens (on for Sancho 87)
