OT - Renting resources around Saranac Lake
I'm exploring schooling options and am visiting Paul Smith's this Friday. Considering that I will be a non-traditional student, and have a big black lab, living on campus isn't really an option. I can't seem to find much on the web and figured I'd ask some you nice folks if you know of anything. I'm expecting to make the move this coming fall. Any resources out there? Anyone looking for an IT guy?
Thanks!
P.S. I'll be in the area on Friday, driving up from Ithaca. I'm thinkinig about sticking around for the weekend, provided I have $$ to spare and the weather is, meh, so-so. Anyone up for anything?

Meet us at Copperas Pond, check the trip planning section.

the college is pretty much all by itself out there ... there are a few apts in a small town/village down towards saranac lake (one of my son's friends used to live there with his wife) ... and then there's saranac lake. your best bet is probably to visit with the folks at housing and see what they might have to offer for alternatives to on-campus housing.
i haven't been up there since the big dorm fire (my son lost just about all of his clothes and other 'stuff' to smoke and water damage) in 1998 (just before graduation). there are a few new things up there and i think the library has been remodeled/expanded too. the views from the library were outstanding, although i don't think i could've gotten much studying done with the lake sitting in front of me!
good luck.

Thanks for the input. I had no idea they had a dorm fire! I was plannng on asking the housing people, but figured anyone living in or around the area could point out some other places.
Thanks! Might see you folks Saturday.

there have been several fires on the Paul Smiths campus over the years ... the dining hall burnt down several years back (while my son was there, 96-98, the dining hall was the gym) ... and i believe that there have been at least two dorm fires.
hmmm ... any chance that jeff went to school up there?

I work at PSC. This year there has been an abundance of non-traditonal students commuting each day. Saranac Lake is home to North Country Community College. So housing there is tight. But there is cheaper housing in Tupper Lake, or Malone if you don't mind a 30 minute or so commute. The gang at Sporck admission center have all your answers on housing in the area. I know many non-traditional students do find housing in Paul Smiths and Gabriels. I think shopping early is your best bet.

adk-46r, thanks for the input! I've found some resources on the web and it looks like, as you said, housing is tight. Heading up in the morning for a
2:00pm appointment.Thanks!
