Mother 3 Walkthrough - Chapter 2

Chapter 2 begins with you in control of Duster, the first thing we need to do is enter the basem*nt and collect our 5 special attacks. Below is a little bit of information about each attack and what it does so that you're better equipped to handle yourself in battle.

Wall Staples: This attack can immobilize a target for 2 or 3 turns. It has a success rate of about 70% or lower against most enemies and it doesn't work on bosses. Normally this attack has the best success rate against sleeping or turned around enemies.

Siren Beetle: Using this will make an enemy turn around during combat (if they even can). This will reduce their Defense by about 20% and will result in them wasting a turn or two. The success rate for this attack is about the same as Wall Staples, around 70% or so.

Hypno Pendulum: You can use this to make the enemy fall asleep, this is useful to hear the battle theme's rhythm and score combos.

Smoke Bomb: Will make enemies cry uncontrollably. This reduces the accuracy of their physical attacks by 50%.

Scary Mask & Tickle Stick: Both items have a success rate of about 70% and they will reduce the enemies Offense or Defense by 20% on the first use and 8% on the second & third use.

When you're done inside of Wes' house exit and grab a Thunder Bomb from behind the house in the same location as before. If you've forgotten, to the left of the chimney while behind the house is where you search. Just like before too, this present will refill each time you advance north of the town square to the cross roads.

Head west from Wes' house and talk with Mapson on the bridge to get the castle we need to visit marked on your map. This isn't really necessary since it's such a big target and a hard area to miss. Continue north through the town square and you'll get two scenes on your way to the castle - the first is with a man and his monkey and the second is with Butch and some money.

In the graveyard you'll be attacked by a group of 4 zombies. I recommend using your Hypno-Pendulum to put some of them asleep to make the fight easier. Or just use a bomb! When the fight is over you'll want to continue north to the castle and get close to the drawbridge for a scene. When you try to exit this area to the south you'll trigger another scene with an ant that gives you the worst explanation of the sound battle system ever.

Note: Zombie Dogs and Mobile Graves are new enemies that will start spawning in the graveyard at this time. I recommend grinding a bit to level up if you're not good at the sound battle system (like me).

Tip: Don't forget the hot spring that is to the west of the graveyard, you can use it to heal up to full.

Return to the graveyard and this time follow the Gravedigger into his house. Head downstairs and push the bookcase over so that you can reveal a secret passage (pictured below). Grab the two presents here too, one has a Beef Jerky and the other has a Peculiar Cheese.

Push the bookcase to the left in the Gravedigger's House to make a path into the castle

Enter into the tunnel and work your way through it to reach the castle. You'll pass a present with a Running Bomb near the entrance and the next screen will have a present with a Nut Bread inside. Climb up the ladder near the Nut Bread present and you'll find yourself in the Osohe Castle Courtyard. Just north of where you climbed up the ladder from the tunnels you'll find a part of the castle wall which is off-color from the rest. Approach this and interact with it to use your Wall Staple technique and climb it.

On top of the castle's ledge you'll get another lecture from ants before you are able to go inside. The ants tell you to put enemies to sleep and listen to their heartbeat to get an idea for the proper rhythm to hit all the combos during battle. At least time he gave you advice you can actually use!

Tip: Your Wall Staples attack will almost always work against ghosts in this area; use this attack to pin them down and score some free hits.

The area we have to explore here is rather small, go through the door to find a present with some Rotten Milk inside of it. When you're ready to advance the story you'll want to dash into the statue holding the giant ball (pictured below). Make sure you hit the statue from the side opposite of the ball - otherwise Duster will get crushed!

Dash into the statue to drop the ball through the floor and provide you a new route

Jump down into the hole you just created and ignore the present, it has a Ghost inside that will burp in your face and make you nauseous. When you're nauseous you can't eat any health food and you can only cure it by visiting a hot spring or consuming a Fresh Mint. Thankfully, you'll find a Fresh Mint inside the present in the next room - I don't recommend you use it though as there is a hot spring coming up.

Continue west into the main hall of the castle, you can open the castle door to the south which gives you a shortcut in and out of the castle. Further west is a present with Fresh Mint inside, a save frog and to the south of that is a ladder that leads to a hot spring. Rest in the hot springs and once you're fully healed take the northern exit into a new room.

Depending on your skill in battle for this game - I may or may not recommend you do some grinding here. If you're like me and struggling to time your combos properly you'll very likely need to do a bit of grinding to offset your skill deficit. The room to the north has 4 different routes to go, I will give you a brief description of what's in each one.

Right Door: Beef Jerky, Rotten Milk & Ladder into basem*nt (dead end)

Middle Door: Ghost Merchant that will trade you Rope Snake for a Rotten Eclair. He has a Fresh Mint and Beef Jerky too but these aren't required for advancing the story. You only need to get the Rope Snake item.

Left Door: A single present with the Battle Memory item inside. You can use this item to fight any enemies that you've previously fought. Basically, this item is used to practice combos since the enemies it summons never fight back and have infinite HP.

Far-Left Door: Stairs that go up to the next area.

Make sure you enter the middle door and purchase the Rope Snake from the Ghost

When you are ready to advance further into the dungeon you'll want to go up the stairs on the left hand side of this room. The first door you see will have a present with Chick Bandana inside. You can interact with the fireplace in this room to fall down the hot springs below you too.

The hallway outside of this room will have 3 suits of armor that attack you, it's best to sprint by them and avoid combat. If you're caught by one the best strategy to use is Hypno-Pendulum to put them to sleep then Scary Mask to reduce their Offense. Two uses of Scary Mask and they will be dealing 1 point of damage each turn.

You'll find a group of friendly ghosts in the room on the far side of the hallway. If you tell the one ghost "yes" that you want some food he will give you Rotten Eclairs, you can get as many as you want. South of this room is the kitchen which you can find the Osohe Sketch in, this is the map of the dungeon. You'll find a ghost next to this box that tells you to keep an eye out of presents with blue ribbons - they carry maps.

Inside the kitchen you'll find a colorful jar that is shaking, inspect it to fight a Strawberry Slime enemy. This can be a tough fight, I recommend putting it to sleep and then debuffing it with Tickle Feather and Scary Mask. Make sure your HP is kept higher than 40 during the fight. Defeating the enemy will get you a Sprinting Bomb as well as 147 EXP.

After you're done with the kitchen return to the dining room and create some Wall Staples that go up to the floor above you. Use my screenshot below to see the exact location - if you look at the wall though you can see where it is a different color in a perfect line that goes up.

Use Wall Staples near the table to climb up to the floor above

Climb up and you'll find a friendly ghost in your room that will trade you 1 Beef Jerky for 1 Rotten Eclair. You can use this to restore your health in this area if you need to. Go south of this ghost and follow the hallway to a dead end, you'll find Aquarius Bracelet and a ghost who burps in your face and makes you sick. When you're ready to continue with the dungeon use your Rope Snake on the wall fixture and swing across the pit.

The first door you come across will have a ghost that warns you about a powerful enemy inside. If you want to save first go into the room at the end of the hallway, this is the stairwell that leads to the fourth floor. There is a save frog here too that you can use - if you go up the stairs a little there will be a short scene during which a pendant will drop onto the ground. You can pick it up now or later, it doesn't matter. The item doesn't cost inventory space.

Return to the room with the powerful enemy, go inside and grab the Durable Shoes from the present. Equip this to Duster immediately and throw away his old ones. You can fight these enemies one at a time (fight the sword then shield then armor) or all three at a time. I recommend one at a time - better safe than sorry!

Before going upstairs make sure you have a few Beef Jerky in your inventory (we'll need some for the boss fight and for the enemies prior to it). Go downstairs and talk with the ghost at the table if you need Rotten Eclairs then trade that to the ghost above him for a Beef Jerky. Once you're confident in your food supplies head up to the fourth floor. Every door except the last one in the hallway is an enemy. Inside the final door you'll find the ghost conductor, Mr. Passion.

Tell Mr. Passion no - you don't want to listen to his music for a fight

I recommend you hit this boss with Smoke Bomb at the start of the fight as he is vulnerable to it. You should also use Scary Mask a few times to decrease his Offense and Tickle Feather works too and will help. After the fight is over inspect the couch to recover your HP. In the next room you'll find Noble Spittoon, which Duster thinks is the item we came for. Exit this room and inspect the fireplace to fall down to the first floor.

Exit the castle and speak with Nippolyte (the grave keeper) outside for the Drawbridge Key. This will let us easily cross the drawbridge and head back into town. Before going home you'll want to stop by Thomas' Bazaar and get the two items he has available. For me it was an Ancient Banana, Flea Charm and Innit Tea. You can return after talking to Wess too if you want, that will change his stock.

When you're ready to advance the story return to Wess in his house on the eastern end of town. He will be very upset with Duster for not getting the right item and there will be a scene, this time he is coming with you. Don't forget to get the Thunder Bomb from behind the house.

Return to town and stop at Thomas' Bazaar for three more items. I got Anti-Paralysis, Antidote and Nut. If you want to keep restocking on items from here return after a cutscene or defeating a boss for new stuff. Continue north through the town square and there will be a scene with pig men arriving at Osohe Castle.

You'll have another scene when you enter the castle, during which the pig men will send a Clayman to attack you. Use Smoke Bomb on him and then Scary Mask, once his damage has been decreased use Tickle Stick on him to debuff his Defense - then go to town.

Our destination is the top floor of the castle again, the same room where we found the spittoon. When you enter this room examine the wall on the northern side of the room - you'll notice the middle part kind of looks like a face. Inspecting the wall will trigger a scene; when the scene is finished enter the room to the north.

Stand on the balcony in the next room and inspect the area below. After you're done enter the room to your right, there will be another scene inside when you arrive.

Your first time meeting Kumatora

During your conversation with the girl you will get to name her, the default name for her in this game is Kumatora. She comes with some PSI abilities, one of which is about to be very useful to us. In the next hallway you'll start to encounter new enemies, one of them is named a Lingering Spirit and they can be one-shot with Kumatora's PK Freeze ability.

Kumatora joins your party at level 10 and it's strongly recommended you spend some time to grind her to level 12 because she will learn some new powerful PSI abilities at that level. If you're good at the combat in this game and good at scoring lots of combos then you'll be fine without leveling her up. Those of you who aren't good at the combo system... get to grinding!

The next room is a stairwell and it will have a present with a Flea Charm inside of it. Keep going forward through the dungeon, whenever you reach a gap use your Rope Snake on the candles to get past. The path through these next few floors is pretty linear so you shouldn't need much guidance. As you progress through the dungeon you'll eventually find another present with a Magic Gelatin inside.

Eventually you'll reach the 8th floor which has a couple of brooms (pictured below). If you're hit by one of these brooms you'll be sent back to the floor below you where you met Kumatora. The only upside to this is when you're hit by a broom it will disappear.

Dodge the brooms otherwise you have to start over from a few floors down

Inside the room with the brooms you'll find two presents, one has a Beef Jerky and the other has a Sprinting Bomb. Keep going upstairs and you'll find another present on the 9th and final floor, this one has a Magic Tart inside. Just north of where you find the tart you'll find the egg that we came all this way for, watch the scene and once it's over prepare for a boss battle! This time you'll be fighting Oh-So-Snake.

Use PK Thunder on Kumatora if you have it, this will be your strongest attack for the fight. The snake is also vulnerable to Smoke Bomb too, you can use that to reduce the incoming damage. During the fight you'll want to try and keep your health above 50, this will make sure you don't get one-shot by the tsunami attack.

When the snake is defeated the water will be drained and there will be a scene, when you regain control of your character it will just be Wes and Kumatora. Return to the town square and you'll watch a scene with Butch and many others, when the scene concludes so will this chapter of the game.
