What’s the matter in education for sustainable development? How sustainability stories make matter matter as issues or problems | Open AccessAnn-Sofie Kall, Ola Uhrqvist & Therese AsplundPages: 544-559 | DOI: 10.1080/13504622.2023.2213418AbstractThis study engages with how sustainability stories can assign meaning to sustainability matter in different ways. The study contributes to discussions on how to combine facts, norms, and the democratic action competence in pluralistic approaches in Environmental and Sustainability Education. A special focus is put on how co-created sustainability stories can be used to provide, explore, and expand shared experiences of sustainability. The analysis engages with how content is defined and made relevant through stories, how they represent matter as pre-defined problems and solutions or as an invitation to exploration and reinterpretation, and how competences for sustainable development are made visible through the characters. The method used is a holistic narrative content analysis of 21 sustainability stories, co-created by pre-school teachers and their children. Three selected stories exemplify the results and show how some stories manage to move back and forth between on the one hand assembling sustainability matter as concrete problems to be solved, and on the other hand as open-ended issues promoting critical reflection. The main conclusion is that these, promising but yet uncommon, stories best represent pluralistic perspectives, creativity, and democratic action competence.#educationforsustainabledevelopment #sustainabilitystories #preschool #sustainability #SDG4https://lnkd.in/gTA5dAfQ

Exciting News from the Future of Education for Sustainability 🌍We're thrilled to announce that our "sustainED: Education Network for Sustainable Futures" project has received significant funding from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung ) under the "SDG Partnerships" program. 🤝sustainED aims to embed sustainability across all aspects of higher education in collaboration with our long-standing strategic partners in Brazil: Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR), Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC), and our new partner Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná (PUCPR). From 2024 to 2027, this initiative will focus on developing modular training and further education offerings in sustainability for management and engineering fields, particularly in the context of emerging countries. 🎓sustainED is structured around three pillars: knowledge transfer, awareness raising, and practical projects, with a special emphasis on teaching and student engagement. Through collaborations with associated practice and policy partners in Germany and Brazil, and innovative teaching events like the "sustainED Practice" Summer Schools, Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt aims to foster a comprehensive understanding of sustainability, including perspectives from emerging countries. 🔍Join us as in this project for a greener, more sustainable future and education! 🌿💡Contact: Prof. Dr. Holger HoppeMore information: https://lnkd.in/emWkQHi9 #sustainability #education #innovation #sustainED #DAAD #SDGPartnerships #THI
